I was so excited when my usually-not-spontaneous husband agreed to checkout Runway Fest 2014 last night! I stumbled upon this event online through Dayton Most Metro just recently, and wanted to check it out. (If I’d been to Austin Landing recently, I would have seen the signs advertising it.) I’m so glad we went!
The event was held at the Wright Brothers Airport in Miamisburg (the location feels more like Springboro to me), which also happens to be where they house a very cool replica of the original Wright B Flyer that was flown by the Wright Brothers. We’ve passed this little airport several times and love watching the private planes take off and land on any given day. Going to Runway Fest was a great way to see this place up close, which especially sounded fun for our two-year-old son.
We got to park right next to the hangars, and several planes were taking off and landing as we walked in. It was neat to see up close!
Dylan and Daddy walking in together. (We forgot a stroller. Can you believe it?!)
As soon as we walked in, Dylan immediately wanted to see what this was all about… He was fascinated by the blowing thing on top. Of course!
It was neat to get up close and personal with some really cool airplanes…
There were also several bouncy houses for the kids, but we opted not to go in them. They looked HUGE to me (probably not ideal for my little guy), and by the time we got there, the lines were pretty long. They sure looked fun, though!
They also had a pony that was giving rides to the kids. I wish I’d taken a picture of it! Again, long line so we opted out.
Personally, I loved seeing the replica Wright B Flyer in the hangar! This is permanently on display at the museum located there at the airport. It’s hard to believe that this thing actually flew!
Dylan seemed more interested in the chain…
The event also had a few food and drink vendors, including this cool Dayton Urban BBQ street truck that you could write on with chalk! We didn’t try any of the food, but it looked and smelled so good.
Dylan got a sucker from a firefighter who was passing them out…
… and we loved the live music! They were playing lots of classic rock hits, which everyone seemed to love (including us).
We probably could have seen and done many more thing if we’d stayed longer, but it was getting close to bedtime when we left and we didn’t want to push our luck with a cranky toddler. We saw people with balloon animals, and I was SO hoping to get one for Dylan, but I never found where the balloon artist was. 🙁 They were also giving airplane rides, which would have been awesome, but definitely not feasible with our little guy. Maybe another time!
We left just in time to beat the crowds coming in for the fireworks at 9:30 p.m.
Overall, we really enjoyed the event and hope to go back again next year! I loved that it was FREE, there was plenty to see and do, and best of all, it was NOT crowded at all. As you can probably see from the pictures, there was so much open space that you could navigate through the event with no problem. It also helped that it was a beautiful night with great weather, so we really loved it all around.
If you also went, let me know! I’d love to hear what you thought about Runway Fest 2014. Hope to see you there next year!
