Recently I shared how much I love giving and receiving Christmas cards. But when the holidays are over, I never seem to know what the heck to do with them all. I honestly can’t bear the thought of just pitching them in the trash, so until now, I’ve just hoarded them in large Ziploc bags and packed them away with the rest of the Christmas decorations every January. (So sentimental, right?)
I was always holding out for the perfect thing to do with them, but never took the time to really create anything with them. I pinned lots of great ideas, but just never followed through with any of them.
But then a friend of mine recently shared this blog post on Facebook, and I thought it was brilliant:
Her idea was simple and easy. Hole punch the cards, add some rings and a cover, and you’ve got yourself a Christmas card memory book. LOVE. Easy? Yes. Inexpensive? Yes. Totally do-able? Absolutely. So I gave it a shot.
I should mention that this would be a great project to do with your little ones! My son didn’t help me with this project because he was too distraught over me taking down the cards in the first place, but his face lit up when I showed him the book when it was done. 🙂
To get started, I picked up these book rings for about $1.20 at Walmart:
I got out my trusty 3-hole punch (while my cat flopped on her back and photobombed this picture).
I pulled off all the cards from our door where they’d hung all December, then punched them using just the top two hole punches along the top-left edge of the cards. I wanted the top and spine to be straight, but didn’t mind if the cards hanging on the bottom weren’t even. For the smaller cards, I centered the two hole punches along the edge of the card so that they wouldn’t be dangling by just the top hole.
When I was done, I added the rings…
… and then clipped on a tag with the year written on it in chalk pen. And as you can see, I loved it so much I went back and did it again for my 2014 cards!
The post I shared above said to make a simple card as a cover for the book, but luckily I had so many gorgeous Christmas cards, I just chose one of my favorites to stand in as the cover. My friend Laura hand-makes her cards, and I think they’re just so pretty, so I went with hers as covers for both books.
I really love how they turned out! They’re so fun to hold in your hand and flip through. And I was so proud that within just a few minutes, I turned our stack of misfit cards into simple books I can toss in a basket or lay out on our coffee table to enjoy every season for years to come.
Do you do something similar with your Christmas cards every year? What creative way do you organize or display them? I’d love to hear about it!
HAPPY NEW YEAR! 🙂
